Univ. Prof. DDr. Erwin Jonke has been appointed to Head of the Department of Orthodontics since 2018. Since that time the Division of Orthodontics evolved to be 100% digital, starting from the first appointment over the treatment planning phase to 3D printed orthodontic appliances for accurate orthodontic treatments. To facilitate a truly digital working process for patients and staff members, multiple software solutions and orthodontic providers are in use for patient treatments. Initial research activities of Univ. Prof. DDr. Erwin Jonke were focused on evolutionary studies, later extending to various promising new areas of orthodontic research: effects of common aligner materials on oral cells, effects of aligner treatment on the oral microbiome or large-scaled questionnaire-based multicenter studies investigating the experiences and expectations of patients with aligner treatment. These research activities have been awarded by a number of national and international grants such as the "Medical-scientific fund of the Mayor of the federal capital Vienna" or a two-year "Invisalign® research award".
Since 2022, dental MRI has been incorporated as a radiation-free, new diagnostic tool for challenging clinical cases. Possible applications are ectopically displaced teeth, insufficient hard and soft tissue dimensions and differential diagnosis of inflammatory processes. Current research of Univ. Prof. DDr. Erwin Jonke is focused on dental MRI, as modern orthodontics requires both: high quality diagnostic tools for treatment planning and minimal radiation exposure for the patient.
