Since that time the Division of Orthodontics evolved to be 100% digital, starting from the first appointment over the treatment planning phase to 3D printed orthodontic appliances for accurate orthodontic treatments. To facilitate a truly digital working process for patients and staff members, multiple software solutions and orthodontic providers are in use for patient treatments. Initial research activities of Univ. Prof. DDr. Erwin Jonke were focused on evolutionary studies, later extending to various promising new areas of orthodontic research: effects of common aligner materials on oral cells, effects of aligner treatment on the oral microbiome or large-scaled questionnaire-based multicenter studies investigating the experiences and expectations of patients with aligner treatment. These research activities have been awarded by a number of national and international grants such as the "Medical-scientific fund of the Mayor of the federal capital Vienna" or a two-year "Invisalign® research award".
Since 2022, dental MRI has been incorporated as a radiation-free, new diagnostic tool for challenging clinical cases. Possible applications are ectopically displaced teeth, insufficient hard and soft tissue dimensions and differential diagnosis of inflammatory processes. Current research of Univ. Prof. DDr. Erwin Jonke is focused on dental MRI, as modern orthodontics requires both: high quality diagnostic tools for treatment planning and minimal radiation exposure for the patient.

Dr. Michael Truppe
Smile Vienna, Austria
Short CV
Dr. Michael Truppe was born in Austria in 1954 and obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical University of Vienna in 1978, following which he completed a year of study in the United States in 1974-75. He specialized in Dental, Oral, and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Dental Clinic in Vienna from 1979 to 1981, after which he worked as a University Assistant at the University Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Vienna from 1981 to 1987. He then served as a university assistant at the University Clinic for Orthodontics in Freiburg, Germany, from 1987 to 1989.
During his research work at the University Clinic in Freiburg, Dr. Truppe became interested in the 3D visualization of medical data and the potential for overlaying computer planning data in real-time with a patient's video to aid in surgical procedures, which is now known as augmented reality in medicine. He also explored the use of video transmission via ISDN lines, which later evolved into video over TCP/IP and the Internet.
From 1992 to 1994, Dr. Truppe was in Salt Lake City, USA, where he developed a system for computer-guided stereotactic navigation based on augmented reality. This technology was implemented for the first time worldwide for teleconsultation, as the video overlay of anatomical structures at the operating theater could be replicated at a remote client computer. He was granted several patents for this invention in the USA, which have since been cited over a hundred times.
In 1995, augmented reality image-guided surgery with teleconsultation was first clinically used worldwide at the University Clinic for Cranio-Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery in Vienna. The clinical results of this technology have been published in numerous scientific journals since then.
Dr. Truppe currently has a private practice in Vienna where he employs technology for a completely digital workflow for Computer-Guided Implantology. Since 2019, Dr. Truppe has been conducting research on the application of artificial intelligence in dentistry, particularly in the area of teleconsultation. His focus is on patient communication with the medical practice through teleconsultation, which he has explored with IBM Watson and recently large language models such as ChatGPT.
